Hiking to Lake Eaton
Lake Eaton State Campground is located on the northeast shore. The campground is an excellent camping destination as well as a day use area. A lovely sand beach and boat launch are located within the campground. While the lake is easily accessible from the campground, a very short hike through an attractive forest gets you out and about and into a much more remote area for those looking for solitude.
This trail follows the Owls Head Mountain trail for just under 1 mile to a short trail to the water. The trail starts out climbing right from the start as it makes its way up through an open hardwood forest. It doesn't take too long before the trail begins to moderate and follow a course through a draw of two adjoining ridges; an attractive wet area with outstanding wildflower opportunities comes next. This wetland has a long boardwalk located through this area to protect it and your feet.
After 1 mile or so you will come to an intersection on your right. This is the side trail to Lake Eaton. The trail is very obvious, the trail to Owls Head Mountain leads left.
Past the intersection you will start an easy downhill hike. After around a quarter mile you will come to the shore of Lake Eaton. A trail continues around the lake and is part of a snowmobile trail. Continue if you would like, but the conditions vary and tend to be very wet. Different vantage points out over the lake can be seen along the snowmobile trail.

This makes for an excellent beginner snowshoe or cross-country ski destination. The initial portion of the trail is not recommended for skiing unless you are very experienced. Snowmobiles may be seen in the area. While a short trail, it is important to be prepared for all winter conditions.

How to get there
From the intersection of Route 28 and Route 30 in the town of Long Lake, follow Route 30 toward Tupper Lake. Continue for about 2 miles to Endion Road on the left. Follow Endion Road for another 2 miles to the trailhead for Owls Head Mountain on the right. A large parking area is located at this point.
