This scenic lake, surrounded by evergreens, sees its fair share of action. A popular brook trout fishing destination for anglers and a scenic place for paddlers to explore.

Many people know of Twitchell Lake because it is where the famous ecologist, conservationist, and wilderness writer Anne LaBastille lived for a time.

Getting there

From the intersection of Route 28 and Big Moose Road just west of Inlet, follow Big Moose Road. Turn right on Twitchell Road after 7.5 miles. Follow this to its end at the boat launch for Twitchell Lake, the trailhead is located here.

Fishing

Shoreline fishing is very limited, only along the boat launch area. But launch a canoe or kayak, and enjoy plenty of options!

There are some small brook trout trout in this lake, but none are going to be of any substantial size, so if you enjoy catching small trout this could be the place for you. Weedless hooks, or floating a small bobber, are highly recommended.

Twitchell Lake was once a quality brook trout water, but the introduction of yellow perch has changed the dynamics of the fishery. A few brook trout are still available along with good numbers of yellow perch.

Special regulations: always follow New York state fishing regulations and be sure to pick up a NYS Freshwater Fishing Guide at your local outfitters or regional NYSDEC office.
