Piseco - Arietta, NY
Piseco/Arietta is a quaint community that stretches around Piseco Lake. Over 95% of the town is New York State forest.
The town boasts its own airport complete with aviation gas service, a helipad, and a single runway. Every year a fly-in breakfast is held, where 500 – 700 folks come to have breakfast and look at the planes. It is also the start and finish for the ever popular Piseco Lake Triathlon, held every July since 1985.
Morehouse
This little town is known by many names to locals: Morehouse, Morehouseville, Whoville. As of the 2010 Census, Morehouse had a population of only 86 people. This town has a small post office (the smallest in New York, actually!) and town hall in one, a large recreation center with pong and a playground, and a roadside flower shop. Morehouse is also home to a small museum, housed in an old church. The big outdoors are very evident here, so scenic drives and sightseeing are popular. Keep your eyes open for statues of bigfoot or a replica of the Mayflower!
Get outside!
There are two NYS public campgrounds on Piseco Lake, a testimony to how lovely and popular the area is. The campsites have boat launches, canoe rental, a free bathhouse, and two beautiful sand beaches.
The 133-mile Northville-Placid Trail runs close to the shore of Piseco Lake, using the Post Office as a landmark. The trail is conveniently located near a store and within walking distance to lodging at the Piseco Lake Lodge or the Irondequoit Inn.
The short, steep hike up Panther Mountain is worth the effort because of the expansive view of the lake. This is one of the most popular hikes in Hamilton County and hikers love the experience! Another excellent outdoor experience is the Foxey Brown Trail. This trail is an ode to the infamous hermit and guide Foxey Brown, whose hermitage was located about 6-miles north of Piseco. The trail itself is mostly flat and gentle, lending itself perfectly to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and mellow nature walks.
