Sagamore Seminars in Science: Stargazing

Sagamore Seminars in Science: Stargazing

Join us for a three-night stargazing program at Great Camp Sagamore! Located in one of the darkest regions east of the Mississippi, the central Adirondacks offers some of the best stargazing opportunities around. This program is suitable for all levels, from novice stargazers to expert astronomy enthusiasts, and everyone in between.

This program will include presentations on astronomy, an overview of how to use telescopes and binoculars, the history of astronomy, identification of celestial objects, and more. Once it gets dark we will shut off all the lights in camp and head outside to observe the night sky.

Program Activities

  • Introduction to astronomy: Earth, Moon, and constellations

  • Evening sky observation: identifying stars and constellations

  • Evening stargazing: mythology, planets, and Saturn

  • Discussion: stars, galaxies, and the Milky Way

  • Telescope session: deep sky viewing of clusters, nebulae, and galaxies
