Juneteenth Red Food Workshop
The Old Forge Library will kick off its Juneteenth programming with a special hands-on workshop, “Red Food Workshop: The Art of Preservation”
Tuesday, June 17 at 5 pm at Niccolls Presbyterian
Presented in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County, the free workshop will explore the cultural significance of red foods in Juneteenth celebrations while teaching participants practical food preservation skills.

Attendees will prepare a fresh beet salad
Learn about the traditions behind red foods, which are commonly featured during Juneteenth celebrations and symbolize resilience, strength, and perseverance.
Participants will also make strawberry jam to take home while learning techniques and history connected to food preservation.
As part of the workshop, Cornell Cooperative Extension will provide beet seeds and seedlings for participants to grow at home.
The workshop is part of the Old Forge Library’s Juneteenth programming, which seeks to create opportunities for community members to learn about the history and cultural traditions associated with the holiday.
“Food has always played an important role in bringing people together and preserving cultural traditions,” said library staff. “This workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the meaning behind Juneteenth foods while learning skills participants can use at home.”
The event is free and open to the public. Registration is appreciated to assist with planning.
