Splendors of spring
Winter 2025–2026 has been a big one, abundant with snowy adventures and colossal fun in our big outdoors. Maybe you spent your winter skiing at Oak Mountain or sledding on our great local hills. Maybe you spent quiet evenings by the fire at a cabin or stargazed amid quiet wilderness areas. Either way, you may be sorry to see winter go. But take heart, for spring brings all sorts of new, refreshed activities! Hamilton County in the spring is an ideal destination for nature lovers and sportsmen looking for classic Adirondack adventures and tranquility. Here are a few of our favorite ways to celebrate spring.
Whitewater rafting
If the speed and thrills of whitewater rafting are something you’ve always wanted to try, come to Hamilton County, where guided rafting trips through the Hudson River Gorge are a classic, must-do spring activity. Standing waves and Class III–IV rapids are among the thrills you’ll experience on full- or half-day adventures. You don’t need to be a pro (though if you are, you’ll still have a blast) to raft these waters, thanks to our expert, licensed guides. Just bring your sense of adventure. We promise you’ll be hooked.

Trout fishing
There are a few hallmarks of spring: crocuses popping up, American Robins poking around looking for worms, and the start of trout season, the time of year when cool Adirondack waters beckon fishermen and women. Within Hamilton County, numerous lakes, ponds, and streams offer great fishing opportunities amid stunning foliage. Whether you’re into tying your own flies or you’re dedicated to your spinners, casting for lake, brown, brook, and rainbow trout is always an exciting, refreshing way to spend a few hours or an afternoon.

Waterfall hikes
The snow of winter leads to roaring, rushing waterfalls in spring, and Hamilton County has the ideal adventure for it: our own Waterfall Challenge! Spring is the best time of year to (safely) explore the area’s many waterfalls, and there truly is something for everyone, from roadside falls that are easy to get to but pack a visual punch to the more out-of-the-way spots that invite adventure.

Paddling
If spending time on the water is more about tranquility than the thundering roar of the Hudson River, you’re in luck: placid lakes and ponds perfect for a canoe or kayak outing abound here. Think: secluded, pine-fringed ponds, quiet lakes great for birding, and plenty of launching points that are easy to get to from welcoming small towns. Spring is an especially wonderful time to paddle as wildflowers begin to bloom and trees unfurl their vibrant, bright green leaves.

Safety first
A word of caution: while you’re having fun, don’t forget to be careful. A big winter like ours means a big spring thaw, so you may find rivers and falls that have more water (and more speed) than you’re used to. Watch your step, keep an eye on the kiddos, and Love Your ADK.
Make time for relaxation
Whether it’s before you head out with your canoe or after a day on the river, the small towns of the Experience Our Adirondacks region provide plenty of great ways to breathe deep, stretch out, and savor spring. From Inlet to Long Lake to Speculator, cozy cafés, cabins, and lodges can help round out your sunny spring days. We have plenty of flavors for you to explore, along with locally owned shops and walkable Main Streets.

Enjoy your spring getaway to Hamilton County!
